Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Gender
My media product which follows most of the common conventions of thriller but instead of having a dominant male, we show the female protagonist more than the male, highlighting that the story is hers and he is just a part of it, yet he is the one causing the problems. We wanted to subvert the generic view society has on men being dominant and make the female role more prominent. However we do follow the aspect of men being sometimes ruthless and sneaky.

Race
In terms of race, we didn't really choose in people because of their race and skin colour, we thought we would chose a couple with the same colour because thats what we fought would get the message across clearer. Normally we see more white people in films than black so we wanted to challenge and reinforce this in our film but not to give off the message that coloured people are bad or dangerous. Films in this genre normally include white or european people.

Age
The common stereotype of young people are that they are off the rails and are trouble makers. So we followed this and made our antagonist the age of 17 to helps emphasise this portrayal of young people to encourage the audience to dislike the antagonist which is what we want. As well as the actual characters to represent the stereotype of young people, we used the setting to take place on an estate to reinforce the rough, edgy lifestyle that the protagonist and antagonist live.

Social class
The characters in my media product come from a lower class background, we wanted to represent this though their clothing which includes puffer coats and typical youngster attire that people that live in common parts of London wear. As the characters are young people in education, they don't have an income or job to really define, that's why we used their appearance and setting to define them.
